Residential aged care facilities or aged care homes are for individuals who may require support that cannot be provided in the home. There are a range of residential aged care facilities for individuals to choose from which vary based on level of independence, services provided, level of care and cost. These include retirement villages and aged care homes with a variety of care levels.

Retirement Villages

Retirement Villages are housing developments that offer a range of accommodation options, facilities, and services. Retirement villages offer residents the opportunity to be surrounded with a like-minded community, often with 24-hour emergency assistance, as well as additional benefits including social events, and facilities such as swimming pools and golf courses. Compared to nursing homes, retirement villages are attractive to individuals who require little to moderate assistance with daily living but want to enjoy the benefits of living in a retirement village.

Types of villages

Resident-funded village

  • Funded by the residents who ‘purchased’ the accommodation

  • Donor-funded village

    • Includes an element of charitable subsidy

    • Entry generally restricted to the ‘needy’

Types of retirement properties

Villas & Independent Living Units (ILUs)

  • For individuals who require little to no assistance with daily activities, but want to enjoy the benefits of living in a retirement community

  • If living in a villa or ILU, at an additional cost, many retirement villages also offer access to a range of home care services, including help with domestic work, and transport to appointments.

  • Serviced apartments

    • Offer access to living assistance, as well as the safety and security of 24-hour support

    • For individuals who need a little extra help with daily living, such as assistance with personal care, laundry, cleaning, and evening meals
